Hiking
This route links the monastery with quieter ledges that retain traces of Montserrat’s hermit communities. Walk towards Sant Miquel, then decide whether to continue into the Sant Joan area. The appeal lies in the sequence of viewpoints, resting places and old walls rather than a compulsory summit. Even paved sections climb noticeably. Turning back after the viewpoint makes a worthwhile short outing, while extending the walk towards the upper hermitages requires more time. Settle the return plan before leaving the monastery complex and let the group’s energy determine the length.
Elevation gain ≈ +112 m
GPS estimate for the short option: monastery–Creu de Sant Miquel viewpoint and back, 2.65 km. Excludes continuing to Sant Miquel chapel, Sant Joan and the upper hermitages.
