Hot-air balloon flights in the Pyrenees

Mountain panoramas from a balloon: flight areas, early starts and weather planning.

How to choose

A balloon gives you time to watch a valley unfold: villages become small islands and mountain ridges appear in layers. The flight follows the wind, so its route and landing point are not a fixed sightseeing circuit. The launch area and that morning’s conditions matter most.

  • Distinguish the flight area from the launch point chosen by the crew.
  • Check total programme time, time airborne and transport back to base.
  • Allow for a different morning and read the cancellation terms.

Ballooning over La Garrotxa

From the air, La Garrotxa brings volcanic hills, fields and woodland into one continuous landscape. Vol de Coloms operates from its base beside Croscat volcano near Santa Pau, in the eastern Pyrenean foothills. The volcanic terrain is the focus here. An early arrival leaves time to watch the balloon preparation and listen to the pilot before lifting away from the ground. Wind determines the route, so a particular crater should never become a promised flyover. Keep the morning free for the complete experience and the ground crew’s return transfer.

Ballooning over Cerdagne

The broad Cerdagne valley reveals the relationship between villages, farmland and the surrounding Pyrenean slopes. Montgolfières des Pyrénées offers passenger flights with morning preparation and a return by ground transport. Visitors staying in Font-Romeu should check the meeting point carefully: local tourism lists Bourg-Madame or La Cerdanya airfield near Alp, across the Spanish border. These are alternatives within one cross-border flying area. Arrange transport to the confirmed location rather than the resort centre. Wind determines the airborne route; leave room afterwards for a leisurely breakfast instead of a tightly timed booking.

Private balloon flight in Val d’Azun

Val d’Azun gives the flight a distinctly mountain setting, with valley villages below and summits framing the horizon. Sud Ouest Montgolfière lists Aucun as the launch location and offers private baskets only in this sector. The journey develops along the valley according to the wind; reaching Argelès-Gazost is not a guaranteed outcome. Choose this format for time with your own small group and the changing view. Staying nearby helps with an early meeting confirmation. Avoid building the day around a promised summit flyover or a fixed landing location.
