What makes it special
Ayous suits walkers who dream of seeing the Midi d’Ossau reflected in mountain water and are willing to devote a day to it. The woodland approach gives way to pasture and open shores, with the mountain’s outline connecting the changing scenes. The classic circuit continues beyond Gentau, although that lake can be a separate return-walk objective. Choose the full loop only with enough energy and a settled forecast. Stopping to enjoy the landscape feels natural here, so the quoted walking time is only part of the day you need.

Access is through Bious-Artigues; parking farther down may add walking. The 14.2 km, 720 m ascent and five hours describe the full official circuit. Turning back at Gentau is a different variant with different figures. Check access, weather and protected-area rules, and carry water and a time margin for the entire loop.
