What makes it special
Estaubé appeals when you would rather walk into a broad pastoral valley than approach a sheer wall. From Gloriettes, the route links reservoir shore, running water and meadows with the cirque ahead. It rewards unhurried observation, with pauses beside the stream and time to examine the slopes. Our choice is the lower valley return walk. Routes towards the high mountain passes need a different level of preparation: the gentle character of the beginning says little about the difficulty of the distant crossings visible above.
- Gloriettes shoreline
- Stream and grazing meadows
- Broad glacial valley
Plan your day
Start at the small car park by the barrage des Gloriettes. The 6.9 km comes from the official lower-route listing; longer variants also exist. The access road is narrow, closes seasonally and has no public transport to the start. Check it is open and avoid roadside parking when the car park is full.
Elevation gain +192 m
Official lower 6.9 km route from Gloriettes car park to cabane d’Estaubé and back. Excludes the extension and additional climb to cascade du Pla d’Ailhet.
