How to choose

The same river can offer introductory sections and much more demanding trips. Choose a particular section and programme rather than a river in general. Water level, group composition and the guide’s assessment affect the actual itinerary; a beautiful valley name is only the starting point.

  • Check the section and time on the water separately from transport and changing.
  • Confirm swimming requirements, crew composition and guiding arrangements.
  • Agree on a backup date or cancellation terms if river flows change.

Aude: the gorges around Axat

Near Axat, the Aude passes through limestone gateways where a wooded valley suddenly narrows between steep walls. Local programmes distinguish an introductory Saint-Georges outing from the more sporting Pierre-Lys reach, with an integral option combining both. This lets you choose by the character of the water as well as the distance. Everyone paddles to the guide’s commands, with quieter moments to study the gorge. Describe the group’s experience before booking and confirm which reach is actually being offered on your chosen date before arranging the journey.

Ariège: Ferrières to Foix

The descent from Ferrières to Foix combines a foothill river with the silhouette of a medieval castle. Small rapids alternate with calmer water, before the outing reaches the white-water course by the town. La Belle Verte offers this reach as an organised half-day programme that can introduce newcomers to rafting in suitable conditions. Its Foix base is relatively close to the railway station, making access unusually convenient for a river trip. Allow time for preparation and the return arrangements: seven kilometres on the water still make a substantial outing.
