Three days in Ordesa: Torla, the shuttle and two valley walks

A Torla base and two different walking days

Three days in the Ordesa valley allow an arrival afternoon in Torla, a circuit of the Estrecho waterfalls and a full day for Cola de Caballo. Give the longer walk the best forecast and swap the walking days if necessary. This plan assumes paths free of snow and ice. Winter conditions require a fresh assessment of the route and the group’s preparation.

The waterfall circuit is 5.75 km; the return walk to Cola de Caballo is 17.5 km. Both start at the Pradera de Ordesa. The photograph looks into the canyon from Faja de las Flores, a high route outside this itinerary.

Torla–Pradera shuttle: check the date first

During regulated access periods, leave the car in Torla and take the bus to the Pradera. It leaves from the car park beside the visitor centre. This shuttle covers Torla–Pradera; if travelling without a car, arrange the journey to Torla and the onward or return connection separately.

Checked on 23 October 2026: OrdesaBus lists services on 23–25 October and 30 October–2 November. For both periods, its timetable page and August leaflet give a first uphill departure at 07:00, a last uphill departure at 17:00 and a last downhill departure at 20:00, all local time. These dates and times do not apply throughout the year.

Open “OrdesaBus · fechas y horarios” in the sources and find the period containing your travel date. Write down the first and last uphill departures and the last bus down separately. The last bus is a transport deadline; plan to finish walking earlier, with daylight and spare time. Save the timetable and allow for queues. The operator says tickets cannot be reserved or bought online; check its arrangements for buying them in person. Outside shuttle periods, car access depends on parking capacity and park restrictions. A ticket does not guarantee an uphill journey once the visitor limit is reached; do not leave the long walk until the last uphill bus.

Day 1: arrive and prepare in Torla

Use the arrival afternoon to settle in and organise the walks. Ask your accommodation about an early breakfast and food to take with you. At the visitor centre, ask about the Estrecho waterfall circuit, the valley-floor path to Cola de Caballo and any restrictions affecting your dates. Check the centre’s opening calendar first using the park source below.

Find the bus departure point and save the official valley map. Mark the Pradera, each day’s destination and the return route. This arrival day does not include the full walk into the valley via Turieto; that would be a separate outing with additional walking effort. Open “MITECO · plano del valle de Ordesa” in the sources, save the PDF and check that its first page opens offline. This document is used here as a map; walking figures come from the route sheets named under each day.

The Torla-Ordesa visitor centre is on Avenida de Ordesa, s/n; its phone number is +34 974 486 472. The park calendar checked on 25 October 2026 lists daily opening from 25 October to 30 December, 09:00–14:00 and 15:15–18:00. The general notice lists closures on 24, 25 and 31 December. Before travelling, open the new park calendar in the sources: hours may change to meet service needs.

Day 2: the Estrecho waterfall circuit

The park’s route 2 starts at the Pradera, visits the Arripas, La Cueva and Estrecho viewpoints and returns along the other bank of the Arazas. Its route sheet lists 5.75 km and 140 m of total ascent. The one-hour time is labelled “ida”, meaning one way, so it cannot be used as the time for the full circuit. Allow half a day including transport and stops as a planning margin, rather than an official walking time.

From the waterfalls, return to the Arripas bridge, cross the Arazas and follow the other bank back to the Senda de los Cazadores bridge and the Pradera. Crossing this bridge does not mean climbing the Senda de los Cazadores trail. Follow the map and current signs. Stay on the path at viewpoints and avoid wet rocks beside the water’s edge. If the group is tired at La Cueva or Estrecho, finish this outing without adding another walk.

Day 3: Cola de Caballo along the valley floor

The Senderos Turísticos de Aragón route sheet describes Pradera–Cola de Caballo–Pradera along the valley: 17.5 km, 490 m of total ascent and 5 hours 30 minutes of walking. Add the bus journey, waiting and breaks. The route passes the lower waterfalls, Gradas de Soaso and the Soaso cirque, then returns along the same path.

This is a long day for someone who rarely walks for several hours. Choose the shorter route if the distance is beyond what the group can comfortably manage. Senda de los Cazadores and Faja de Pelay form a different variant with their own conditions and are outside this plan. Use the linked Cola de Caballo page to compare the route before setting out.

Work out your turnaround time

Start with the time you need to be back at the Pradera, allowing daylight and a margin before the bus. Subtract the return walk from your farthest point, breaks and spare time for delays. The result is your turnaround time, even if you have not reached Cola de Caballo.

For example, if you want to reach the Pradera by 16:00 and allow three hours to walk back plus an extra hour, turn around at 12:00. This illustrates the calculation; it is not a walking estimate from every point on the route. Use your group’s actual pace, the forecast and daylight on your chosen date, and reassess along the way. A late bus does not extend daylight.

When the weather or access changes

Before leaving, open the park notices and AEMET’s weather warnings and mountain forecast for the Aragonese Pyrenees. Check rain, thunderstorms, wind and snow for the hours you plan to walk. Swap the days if the forecast makes that useful. Cancel the affected walk if access is restricted, snow or ice is present, or other conditions exceed the group’s preparation.

The fallback is to stay in Torla, visit the visitor centre if it opens that day, or rest. Check its hours before heading out; a lower location does not make every walk suitable during a weather warning. If tiredness is the only problem and conditions allow walking, shorten the outing instead of adding a journey to another valley.
