Sant Maurici: decide how you want to approach

Sant Maurici combines a lake setting with the sharp outline of Els Encantats and a substantial forested valley. The planning question begins before the shore: how much of the approach do you want to walk? Park access is regulated, and authorised local transport changes the starting point and the effort involved. Compare complete itineraries from their actual trailheads rather than treating every photograph of the lake as the same outing.

Choose this area if you enjoy building a day in layers: an approach, a lakeside pause and an optional extension selected from the park's current information. Leave that extension undecided until you understand the weather, remaining time and everyone's energy.

Ayous: allow time for the sequence of lakes

The Ayous walk approaches from Bious-Artigues and reaches Roumassot, Miey and Gentau in succession. Gentau is the familiar viewpoint where the Pic du Midi d'Ossau can reflect in the water. The full lake circuit is a more substantial undertaking than visiting the first lake beside the parking area; its published itinerary continues through additional mountain terrain.

Choose Ayous when the progression through several landscapes is the attraction. Decide in advance whether your plan is an out-and-back or the complete circuit, then check the current official route sheet. Reflections depend on light and wind, so a photograph should be a possibility rather than a condition for enjoying the walk.

Tristaina: a compact route in open terrain

The official Tristaina lakes itinerary starts in the La Coma area of Ordino Arcalís and visits three high mountain lakes. Its moderate grading belongs to that specified route and starting point. Other approaches, summit additions and a visit to a panoramic viewpoint can change the outing considerably. Check the current access arrangements before assuming that a road or lift will deliver you to the same place.

Choose Tristaina for a day focused on an open lake basin, with time to stop and compare the shores rather than chase an extra summit. Shorter distances still deserve proper footwear, warm layers and an honest assessment of wet, snowy or windy conditions.

Compare the day, then respect the shoreline

Write down the start, total ascent, return route and transport dependency for each option. A beautiful lake reached with a comfortable return margin is a better fit than a famous circuit squeezed between two long drives. None of these names gives you a universal promise about parking, solitude or accessibility on your chosen date.

Treat swimming rules as location-specific. Aigüestortes explicitly prohibits bathing and aquatic activities; do not transfer assumptions from another destination. At every lake, use current local information, keep equipment and washing products out of the water, and choose established places to pause. Plan the day around walking and looking, with enough flexibility to protect both the landscape and your return.
