Plan the journey back first
A photograph of a lake does not define a day out. For an autumn visit, mark three points first: where you can leave the car, where your chosen transport drops you off, and where the described walk begins. If they differ, the connecting legs belong in your itinerary too.
Then work backwards from the lake to the stop and from the stop to your parking place or accommodation. Note the last suitable service and allow for waiting, breaks and the slowest participant’s pace. Only then decide how far to walk. The three cases below were checked against their sources on 12 September 2026.
Bouillouses: check the exact shuttle date
Département 66 lists shuttles on 5–6, 11–13 and 19–20 September 2026. Outside those periods it describes private-vehicle access, subject to circumstances such as full parking or the winter closure of RD60. Check the current notice before travelling.
Planning takeaway: a saved summer travel plan cannot settle access on a particular autumn date. Establish how you will reach the dam before choosing a lake circuit. If transport does not fit, avoid adding an improvised walk-in to an already long outing; choose another route with a clear start and return instead.
Néouvielle: Aubert and Orédon are different starts
Saint-Lary Tourisme describes the lake road as seasonal, normally from late May to early November depending on snow. The upper section has separate access controls. That general season is not a promise that you can drive up on any particular day.
Visit Néouvielle’s short Aumar circuit starts at the Aubert car park. Walking from Orédon changes the complete outing; the short circuit’s figures do not apply. The two tourism pages give different morning access times, so no exact time is repeated here: confirm it locally.
Locate the parking place you can actually reach and compare it with your saved track’s start. If you must begin lower down, reassess ascent, duration and the whole group’s return. Calling an extra section an approach does not remove it from the day’s effort.
Aigüestortes: valley buses and lake taxis
Bus del Parc connects surrounding settlements. The 4×4 taxis from Boí and Espot towards Aigüestortes and Sant Maurici are a separate service. The park describes them as year-round but asks visitors to check return times. Private driving inside the park is restricted.
The 2026 Pla de l’Ermita — Vielha — Espot — La Pobla de Segur timetable covers 22 June–30 September, plus 10–12 October. That October exception does not cover every route in the PDF: the Perves and Sallente services have separate operating periods ending on 30 September.
Without a car, check the entire chain: bus to the settlement, any transfer, transport to the trailhead and the journey back. Do not choose a ticket simply because you recognise Espot; match the stop’s full name to the boarding point for your next connection.
Five details to save
Date and source: save the timetable with its year and the page where you checked updates. Identify which route each weekend or holiday note belongs to.
Start: record the car park or stop, rather than only the lake. Walk: save the specific route that begins there, including its distance and ascent.
Return: note the boarding point, direction and last suitable service. Alternative: choose a separate shorter itinerary or a day without mountain walking in advance, in case access or conditions do not fit.
Choose the walk after checking access
For families, a practical start and a clear return may matter more than the number of lakes. Compare the whole day, including travel and waiting, instead of looking only at walking time. For a longer outing, decide beforehand when continuing would stop fitting your return plan.
