Montserrat. A different kind of mountain.

Montserrat is a separate Catalan massif, not part of the Pyrenees. Its rounded rock towers and narrow passages offer a very different experience. We include it as an extension to a journey through Catalonia: a day from Barcelona or a stop on the way to the Pyrenees.

Avenc dels Pouetons: vertical caving

Pouetons is a technical cave where exploring underground Montserrat requires rope training. Wearing a helmet is not sufficient: the team needs descent, ascent and coordination skills in confined terrain. The park restricts visits to protect bats and issues permits only within a defined season. A compelling underground objective must therefore become a technically prepared and authorised plan first. Beginners should discuss suitable training with a specialist club or guide. The illuminated Salnitre visit is a different experience and does not, by itself, provide the skills needed to enter Pouetons.

Salnitre: visiting the Montserrat caves

The Salnitre caves at Collbató introduce Montserrat from inside through an equipped visitor route. Passages between chambers, lighting and a guide’s explanation draw attention to details invisible from outside the massif. This is an organised cave visit, without independent entrance-finding or rope work. It still involves walking and stairs, including the approach from the car park. Before booking, confirm mobility requirements, language and timing. The visit can form a quieter part of the day and complements time on the surface paths, while remaining a different activity from technical vertical caving.

No rope training; visitors must be able to walk and negotiate numerous stairs.

La Teresina · closed historic route

Closed

La Teresina remains a familiar name in older Montserrat guides, but it must not be presented as an available outing. The park announced permanent closure on 17 May 2019 and prohibits access and use. This record helps readers interpret old tracks and accounts associated with the northern walls. To reach Sant Jeroni, choose the marked walking route. For a technical day on rock, agree a permitted climb with a guide. Sharing a summit or sector does not make the former ferrata a valid alternative, nor does it remove the need to assess other passages separately.
