CATALONIA · BEYOND THE PYRENEES

Montserrat. A different kind of mountain.

Montserrat is a separate Catalan massif, not part of the Pyrenees. Its rounded rock towers and narrow passages offer a very different experience. We include it as an extension to a journey through Catalonia: a day from Barcelona or a stop on the way to the Pyrenees.

Gorros: multipitch climbing

The Gorros formations offer a genuine multipitch introduction to Montserrat conglomerate. Rounded pebbles, foot placement and balance require adaptation from indoor climbing. Local guides offer routes including Via del Carles on Gorro Frigi, while the final choice should reflect the group and conditions. Sant Joan funicular can shorten the approach when operating, making transport part of the day’s timing. The experience also includes belay stances, rope-team communication and an organised descent. Describe your recent climbing experience to the guide, including which rope skills you have practised rather than only your highest grade.

Roped technical climbing; the guide determines the appropriate route and required experience.

Agulles: climbing the rock needles

In Agulles, walking between towers and climbing one of them are different undertakings. A roped ascent changes the landscape’s scale: woodland drops below and neighbouring needles surround a small summit. Local guides offer ridge routes matched to the rope team’s experience. On a first visit, choose one agreed objective and give the approach, climbing and descent proper attention. A face that appears gently angled from a distance does not guarantee an easy route. Protection and descent arrangements can vary considerably between neighbouring rocks, even when their height and appearance seem similar.

La Teresina · closed historic route

Closed

La Teresina remains a familiar name in older Montserrat guides, but it must not be presented as an available outing. The park announced permanent closure on 17 May 2019 and prohibits access and use. This record helps readers interpret old tracks and accounts associated with the northern walls. To reach Sant Jeroni, choose the marked walking route. For a technical day on rock, agree a permitted climb with a guide. Sharing a summit or sector does not make the former ferrata a valid alternative, nor does it remove the need to assess other passages separately.
