What makes it special
Madriu is appealing because its mountain scenery can be read alongside traces of the valley’s earlier life. Paths, woodland clearings and the surroundings of Fontverd create an outing for thoughtful observation without needing a large lake as the final reward. Our choice is the circular route from the Engolasters road through Coll Jovell, introducing the valley within a day. Study the return route in advance, since nearby itineraries lead to different exits. Fontverd is a worthwhile destination itself; continuing to more distant huts is unnecessary for a satisfying day.

Plan your day
For the 13 km circuit, start at the car park at kilometre 6.2 on the Engolasters road. Do not confuse it with the through-route via Ràmio to La Plana, which needs different return arrangements. Save the official map. Carry food and water rather than assuming catering is available at Fontverd hut.
