Choosing a base
Choose Vall de Boí to combine snowshoeing with villages, Cauterets for a day in the Pont d’Espagne winter area, or Grandvalira for an organised outing. Start with one base, then confirm the activity and access for your date. A summer trail shown on a map is not automatically a winter route.
This is a winter planning comparison based on sources read on 28 October 2026. It does not confirm opening, snow, available places or transport for a particular day. The photograph is an archive view of the surroundings of Cauterets, taken on 3 March 2004.
Quick choice
Vall de Boí: one snowshoe route after checking conditions, with a village for the second part of the day.
Cauterets / Pont d’Espagne: the marked winter area and sledging when the chosen areas are open.
Grandvalira: a specific organised activity with confirmed date, meeting point and conditions.
Vall de Boí: snowshoes and villages
Vall de Boí’s tourist office describes two marked snowshoe routes. Pilaret de Durro is 4.3 km out and back with about 200 m of ascent, rated moderate by the source. Pala de Ginebrell is 4.9 km out and back with about 345 m of ascent, rated difficult. Distance alone does not establish winter difficulty.
The route towards Estany Llong depends on the snow line and public 4×4 transport to Planell d’Aigüestortes. Ask the tourist office which route is available, where it starts and whether your group needs a guide. Signs alone do not confirm suitable snow and weather.
One-day plan: a confirmed morning outing followed by a village or Romanesque church. Check the chosen venue’s opening hours. Keep a second mountain route for another day, as snow and visibility change the pace.
Cauterets: the Pont d’Espagne winter area
Pont d’Espagne has a marked snowshoe itinerary in its winter area. Follow the purple signs, as skiers also use the area. Official pages differ on distance and layout, so ask for the current map of the open route before setting out. Hire snowshoes and poles in Cauterets before travelling to the start.
Plateau du Clot has a designated sledging area. Confirm that it is open and check its rules. Local tourism advice recommends visiting Lac de Gaube in winter with a mountain professional; it is a separate mountain outing. Dogs are prohibited in Pont d’Espagne from 1 November to 30 April.
One-day plan: the open winter-area route and, if time and energy allow, sledging. Before leaving Cauterets, check the road or shuttle, your return service if using public transport, and the area’s closing time. Choose a village activity if the route is closed.
Grandvalira: conditions for each activity
For the El Tarter snowshoe outing, the operator lists Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday: meet at 09:00 at the ski school in the Obac building, with the activity from 10:00 to 13:00. Snowshoes and poles are included; mountain footwear is mandatory. At least two participants are required and solo bookings carry a surcharge. Confirm your date and meeting point in the booking.
The outing usually goes outside the ski area, though the route can change with snow conditions; it does not require a pass. The optional insurance described on the page only covers the ski area. Before paying, ask what cover applies to the actual route outside it. Independent outings inside skiable areas have different Mountain Pass rules: check authorised routes and times.
Mushing conditions vary by sector. Grau Roig does not require a ski pass; El Tarter requires a skier or pedestrian pass and presenting the voucher at the ticket office one hour before the confirmed time. Conditions for one activity do not apply to another.
One-day plan: one confirmed morning activity followed by a quiet afternoon in the valley. Before combining sectors, check travel time and meeting points.
Before booking
1. Open the official source for your chosen base, linked below. Find its winter activity and ask whether it runs on your date. A booking button does not confirm available places.
2. Ask for a map of the open route, its start and return time. Ask which local forecast and snow and avalanche bulletins apply, and whether your group needs a guide or a different option. No recent bulletin does not mean no danger.
3. Check footwear, included equipment, passes, insurance and cancellation in your booking. Confirm where to collect equipment and whether cover extends outside the ski area.
4. Check age conditions, minimum group size, and the meeting place and time. Plan both journeys: the last shuttle or lift can limit your day.
5. Keep a closure alternative: a village, cultural visit or another confirmed valley activity. Check its opening hours separately.
