Choose the entrance before the walk
On a map, Irati can look like one large forest destination. Planning a walk requires a more precise answer: which side will you approach from, and where does the walking actually begin? The official Visit Navarra portal distinguishes access through the Salazar and Aezkoa valleys. Ochagavía leads towards Casas de Irati; Orbaizeta serves Arrazola and parking by the Irabia dam. These points cannot replace one another within the same route description.
Start with the name of your chosen walk and its documented starting point. Then check the approach from your accommodation. This makes it easier to assess the complete day, including the drive both ways, and avoids arriving at an information point with a saved itinerary that starts at another forest entrance.
Casas de Irati: a clear example from Salazar
For Bosque de Zabaleta, the reference point is Casas de Irati. The official route description starts the circuit beside the car park and information hut. The walk passes through the forest and reaches the upper end of the Irabia reservoir. Mentioning the reservoir does not mean that the route completes a circuit of its entire shoreline.
SENDA has a separate Bosque de Zabaleta route page with the published details and their source. Use it as the description of that particular walk, rather than a summary of every outing in Irati. Consider the complete circuit when choosing: reaching an attractive stretch of water is only part of the day, and you will still need to return to your starting point.
Aezkoa: another approach needs another plan
If arriving through Orbaizeta makes more sense, first establish which point your itinerary requires: Arrazola or parking by the Irabia dam. The official tourism portal places Paraísos/Erlan on the dam side. It is a separate way to explore the forest and should be prepared using its own route description.
Do not assemble a walk from fragments of different route pages simply because they all mention Irabia. Identify the start, direction of the circuit and return to the same parking area on your map. Switching entrances may suit your accommodation, but it means reviewing the walk itself, rather than merely changing the destination in your car navigation app.
Choose a circuit for the whole group
For comparison, Visit Navarra lists 8.74 km and 285 m of ascent for Zabaleta, versus 5.42 km and 129 m for Paraísos Erlan. These are two different routes with different starting points. The figures help compare effort but do not include travel from your accommodation or establish trail conditions on your chosen day.
An autumn forest walk often includes time for photographs, snacks and looking around. Distance alone therefore cannot tell you whether an itinerary fits the day. Compare the described terrain, total ascent and return journey with every participant’s experience and the time available. A circular route is not automatically easy, nor does it necessarily offer a simple way to finish early.
For a family outing, a child’s usual walking endurance is more useful than a universal minimum age. Decide before setting off what you will do if progress is slower than expected. An alternative should be another clearly understood walk or a change of plans; an unfamiliar forest path does not become a suitable shortcut because it looks shorter on a screen.
What to check before leaving
The Irati territorial tourism project lists information points at Casas de Irati and Arrazola, along with tourism offices in Ochagavía and Aribe. Choose the contact for the side you intend to use. Some pages give seasonal opening hours without an unambiguous year: confirm current operation, access to your chosen parking area and local restrictions before travelling.
Visit Navarra also publishes information about a maintenance charge. Check its application to your entrance and date with the relevant local source. A general access map or an older timetable does not establish that an information point will be staffed on your walking day. Save the route map in advance, then compare it with signs and current information when you arrive.
Autumn without a promise of perfect colour
Plan Irati as a forest walk whose value does not depend on recreating a photograph of golden trees. The official sources reviewed do not establish a guaranteed date for peak colour on a particular route. Selecting a week cannot replace checking the forecast and the condition of your chosen approach before departure.
Keep the decisions separate: choose an entrance and a manageable circuit first, then assess the day’s conditions. SENDA’s general autumn planning article covers weather and daylight, while the hiking equipment guide helps with packing. The Irati photograph accompanying this article is an archive image of green woodland; it does not document current leaf colour or trail conditions.
